Course Overview

This course is aimed at those who want to start making use of Microsoft Access, to move from one level databases associated with holding data in Microsoft Excel into the realms of multiple table relational databases. The course will cover all the basics of multiple table databases including the advantages and disadvantages. This course is a perfect starting point for a future in data manipulation.

Database theory

    Explanation of the components that make up a database e.g. Tables, records, fields
    What is a relational database?
    Creating a database using the Database Wizards

Tables

    How to create a single table database.
    Using data types, field properties, input masks using the wizard, validation rules, captions, default values, fields required, field size, zero length.
    Primary keys.
    How to create a multi-table database, (Relational database)
    Creating links between tables.
    Working with referential integrity. Prevent data in one table being deleted when it has links to data in another table.
    Viewing and editing related data in a sub datasheet.

Queries

    Theory on using Queries in a database.
    How to extract information from your database using queries.
    Creating a query from single and multiple tables
    How to sort the results of a query.
    How to hide fields in a query.
    How to produce totals using a query.
    How to produce calculations using queries.

Forms

    Theory on using Forms in a database
    How to view/change data in your database using forms.
    How to create a form using the wizard.
    How to modify a form, change the colours, move controls (change the layout).
    How to create a form that refers to two or more tables.

Reports

    How to extract information and present it in a readable format
    Creating reports from your database using the report Wizard

Database normalisation

    Designing tables in an efficient form to minimise data replication and ensure good database design. This section is not always covered due to time limitations. It is included as an introduction to the intermediate course. This section will be covered if time permits.
